Outstanding Teaching Award Presented to Vice Dean Abril

In her acceptance speech on Monday, April 16, to the Faculty Senate and other University guests, Vice Dean Abril had some inspiring words to share. We would like to share some of them with you.

Teaching is an expression of love.

“Teaching is an expression of the respect and appreciation we have for our disciplines and for our students.  As teachers we are representatives of our individual disciplines and it is on our shoulders to convey our passions to our students.”

On humility.

“It takes humility and an openness to listen to students and to explore what they need.  It is also important to remember that we must, as teachers, learn every day.”

Finally, fun.

“You have to have fun. Instead of heaviness there should be a lightness in teaching — curiosity, exploration and even laughter.  I thank Dean Quelch and all of my colleagues at the Miami Business School who are innovating and reenergizing the culture of the School with fun — creating a supportive environment that fosters creativity and experimentation.”

“This award goes to all who have taught me over the years and still teach me today by their example.  I look forward to many more years of learning how to teach.”

The Miami Business School is proud to have deeply committed individuals like Vice Dean Abril leading by example each day.
