At the 16th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, presented last week in Las Vegas, the award for “Best Instrumental Album” went to Ed Calle & Mamblue for Dr. Ed Calle Presents Mamblue. Calle, an alumnus of the University of Miami Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music, is a five-time Grammy nominee.
Dr. Ed Calle Presents Mamblue is an Afro-Cuban jazz orchestral recording and features more than 115 of the most influential jazz and studio musicians in South Florida. A renowned musician, composer, orchestrator, scholar, and professor, Calle has become one of the most recorded saxophonists in history. He has appeared on more than 1,200 albums, almost 9,000 singles, and countless television and movie soundtracks with artists ranging from Frank Sinatra, Gloria Estefan and Celia Cruz to Sylvester Stallone and Andy Garcia.
Another Frost School graduate, Raquel Sofίa, B.M. ’09, was nominated as “Best New Artist.” The award for that category went to Monsieur Periné.
Calle is a full-time professor of Music Business and Production Duties at Miami Dade College and operates 36th Street Music Records and Publishing. He also tours as the featured soloist with the Afro-Cuban Funk super group PALO.
The Latin Grammy Awards is awarded by The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences to recognize outstanding achievement in the Latin music industry. The Latin Academy is a multinational membership-based association composed of music industry professionals, songwriters, musicians, producers, and other creative and technical recording specialists. The organization is dedicated to improving the quality of life and culture for Latin artists and music.
