'Cane Records, the student-run record label of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, won the Independent Music Award for Best Album Compilation for its latest release titled For The Record. This prestigious award was announced November 12th, 2016 during a gala event held at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. The nominations for the Independent Music Awards were culled from thousands of submissions from North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe. This year, judges included Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, Slayer, The Kills, Lalah Hathaway, Meshell Ndegeocello, Suzanne Vega and Shelby Lynne as well as influential press and talent buyers from the Americas, Europe and the Pacific Rim.
For The Record consists of twelve new up-and-coming artists from various music genres performing their original songs. Our stellar artists on For The Record: Phonobomb, ZOLA, Andrea Lopez, Jack Lax, Souvenir, Meaghan Campbell, Noah Tauscher, Mint Trip, Ashley Levin, Gabriel Berenbaum, Mel Bryant and Anh Le. ‘Cane Records creates, markets and promotes a compilation album each year to attract fans as well as interest from music companies such as record labels, music publishers, music supervisors and promoters. To add to ‘Cane Records efforts, winners of this year’s 15th Independent Music Awards will receive active promotion, distribution and performance opportunities that will place them in front of millions of music fans and industry decision makers.

‘Cane Records, one of the first student-run record labels in the US, was created in the fall of 1993 by a small group of ambitious graduate and undergraduate students in the Music Business and Entertainment Industries program at the University of Miami School of Music. Since its inception, ‘Cane Records has released over twenty albums and continues to be one of the leading student-run record labels in the country.
