On December 6, 2016, The Academy of Recording Arts and Science revealed the nominees for the 59th Annual GRAMMY® awards, and two Frost School of Music faculty topped the list: John Daversa, Chair of Studio Music and Jazz and conductor of the Frost Concert Jazz Band, and Brian Lynch, Associate Professor of Jazz Trumpet.

JOHN DAVERSA

John Daversa’s Kaleidoscope Eyes: Music of The Beatles, has been nominated in three categories: Best Large Jazz Ensemble, Best Arrangement, Instrument or A Capella (Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds), and Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals (Do You Want To Know A Secret). This project was released earlier this May on BFM Jazz, featuring The John Daversa Big Band. Since its conception in 1996, this ensemble has riveted audiences worldwide and has received critical acclaim upon the release of their studio projects.

In Kaleidoscope Eyes, Daversa takes classic Beatles tunes and arranges them for a 40-piece orchestra. Popular songs Here Comes The Sun and I Saw Her Standing There are included in the 9-track album. In addition to being a GRAMMY® nominee, Daversa is a performer, composer, arranger, and educator, serving as the chair of Studio Music and Jazz at the Frost School of Music.

Daversa will be performing at the Frost School’s Festival Miami, Thursday, January 26 with the Frost Concert Jazz Band in a tribute to Dizzy Gillespie featuring Jon Faddis, Jimmy Heath, Ignacio Berroa, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Martin Bejerano.

BRIAN LYNCH

Brian Lynch’s Madera Latino has been nominated for Best Latin Jazz Album. Released earlier this September through Hollistic MusicWorks, this project takes on the exploration of the late Woody Shaw, a legendary trumpeter who elevated the jazz scene. In Madera Latino, Lynch reveals an album four years in the making and envelops Shaw’s work with his own award-winning Latin Jazz style, including pieces such as Zoltan, Song of Songs, and Sweet Love of Mine. His band features percussionists Pedrito Martinez, Little Johnny Rivero, and Anthony Carrillo, bassist Luques Curtis, drummer Obed Calvaire, and pianist Zaccai Curtis.

Lynch is a GRAMMY® Award-winning trumpeter (Simpático, 2006), composer, arranger, and educator. His record label Hollistic MusicWorks serves as a platform to not only launch his own work, but to also develop new artists and house legendary artists such as Killer Ray Appleton. Lynch is a Jazz Trumpet Associate Professor for the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.
