Black History Monthwhich is also known as Black Awareness Month at the University of Miamiis an annual celebration to honor the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Black people and their role in the history of the United States. Throughout the month of February, the University community has scheduled a variety of campus-wide, in-person, and virtual events including a day of service, networking events, a church service, and more.

Kayla Davis, Black Awareness Month committee chair, who is a junior studying broadcast journalism, chose the theme “Keep the Fire Alive” to reignite the passion that the Black community kindled during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests.

“Most of all, I really want everyone to enjoy the events, but also help those that identify with the culture to feel a sense of belonging and educate those that are unfamiliar with Black culture,” said Davis. “The fight toward racial equality and equity is not over and will be highlighted throughout our events in February.”
