UM spirit shines through as students and parents bond at Family Weekend 2014

A spirited pep rally and barbeque, meetings with academic deans, and informational sessions on a variety of topics were among the many activities offered during Family Weekend 2014.

It was an opportunity for mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters to reconnect—a chance for parents to experience the academic, cultural, and social programming that is helping to turn their students into young men and women. University of Miami Family Weekend 2014 was all of that and more.

Held October 9-12, the event featured a variety of activities that allowed parents to spend time with their students as well as learn about the University. From meetings with academic deans, to informational sessions on topics such as the residential college system and health and wellness at the U, to tours of the Lowe Art Museum and Cuban Heritage College, to the president’s barbecue and spirited pep rally for the UM-Cincinnati game, activities ran the gamut.

The Department of Orientation, Division of Student Affairs, and other UM departments played key roles in organizing the weekend.

It was Donna E. Shalala's last Family Weekend as UM president. Last month, she announced she is stepping down at the end of the 2014-2015 academic year.
