Another academic year has come to a close, and the Department of Housing and Residential Life has successfully helped nearly 4,000 students move out of their on-campus rooms and apartments. Many students leaving campus can't take some of their items with them, so as in past years, many chose to donate their items to Goodwill Industries South Florida.

The Goodwill donation trucks, located outside each of the on-campus residential areas, transported a total of 69,590 pounds of lightly used goods to local Goodwill donation centers. This number is an increase of 2,680 pounds from last year.

“We see the Goodwill donation program as a win-win,” said Jon Baldessari, director of housing operations and facilities for Housing & Residential Life. “Our donation program helps our students save on shipping or storage costs for their belongings, and Goodwill benefits from the generosity of our students.”

In addition to Goodwill donations, University of Miami staff, faculty and students were encouraged to take part in the campus-wide food drive organized by the Student Food Recovery Network and Feeding South Florida, in partnership with HRL and GreenU. “Thanks to the support of community partners like UM, we are able to provide these meals to serve the more than 785,000 food insecure individuals in our community,” said a Feeding South Florida representative.
