Faculty Exchange Pilot Program at the College of Arts & Sciences Expands UM’s Global Scholarship and Outreach

Program set to launch in Fall 2016 The University of Miami College of Arts & Sciences is expanding its global reach by launching its first faculty exchange pilot program. The exchanges also provide selected faculty from overseas institutions the opportunity to conduct research and collaborate with colleagues at the UM College of Arts & Sciences.

Known as the International Faculty Exchange Program, the program is launching during the 2016-2017 academic year.

“This is an innovative program that gives our faculty the opportunity to start or strengthen research collaborations with faculty members all over the world. The program should also serve to increase the international visibility of the University of Miami and its College of Arts and Sciences,” said Angel Kaifer, senior associate dean at the College of Arts & Sciences.  

Harvey Siegel, a philosophy professor at the UM College of Arts & Sciences, is participating in the pilot program. Professor Siegel is traveling to Scotland to work with faculty at the EIDYN Research Centre (Edinburgh Centre for Epistemology, Mind, and Normativity) at the University of Edinburgh during the Fall 2016 semester. After Professor Siegel completes his semester abroad, a University of Edinburgh faculty member will spend the spring semester teaching and working with faculty at the College.

“This program came up at the perfect time,” said Siegel, who looks forward to working with several of the well-known epistemologists at the University of Edinburgh. “I have followed their work for some time, as our research interests overlap considerably, and am looking forward to working on joint projects – co-authored publications, grant applications, etc. – with faculty at the centre. Ideally, the exchange will facilitate the building of long-lasting relationships and future exchanges of faculty and graduate students. Hopefully, UM and Edinburgh will both benefit from the exchange regarding research, publications, and the education of our graduate students.”
