Nika Hosseini, an ecosystem policy and science major at the University of Miami (UM) College of Arts and Sciences, was the recipient of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce’s “Green Means Green” Award for “Outstanding Green Student Leader.”
The awards, handed out during the “Green Means Green Award” luncheon on April 29, 2016, recognized the most innovative, impactful, and environmentally friendly practices by a company or an individual in the local community.
“It was humbling to win the award for ‘Outstanding Green Student Leader,’” said Hosseini, who graduated in May 2016. “I began working on environmental initiatives three years ago when I stepped foot onto the campus, and I'm excited to continue doing so in my future endeavors. I'm honored and excited for what is to come!”
While at the University of Miami, Hosseini joined the student government-led organization called the Energy & Conservation Agency. She also started her own foundation, the Nika K. Hosseini Foundation. The foundation’s goal is to “create positive environmental and social change through awareness, education and action in communities throughout the world.”
Her first project is to create a solar-powered water filtration system in Uganda to help citizens gain access to a healthy supply of fresh water. To date, the foundation has raised nearly half of the $30,000 goal it has set.
