On Wednesday, January 30, 2019, three engineering faculty joined an interdisciplinary group of 10 faculty members across the university to begin their journey into transforming the learning experiences of their students using augmented reality and spatial computing with the University of Miami (UM) Faculty Learning Community (FLC).
The three faculty, which were selected from a pool of applicants based on their interest in exploring and integrating augmented reality among other criteria include: Hammam Alsafrjalani, assistant professor in practice in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Diana Arboleda, senior lecturer in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering and Weizhao Zhao, professor in Biomedical Engineering.
The theme of augmented reality (AR) and spatial computing (SC) is in line with the University of Miami’s new partnership with Magic Leap. Over the course of eight sessions, our faculty will explore AR hardware, discuss the educational implications of AR, create AR experiences, or use AR to enrich and enhance one of their courses. Through this experience, they will become an important voice as we address curricula change at the college.
“This year’s FLC facilitated by my colleague Gemma Henderson is a wonderful opportunity for our faculty to engage with their peers from other disciplines and experiment with AR in the classroom,” says Renee Evans, senior instructional designer with the College of Engineering.
The FLC is a trans-disciplinary community of practice where faculty are actively engaged in collaboration, experimentation with technology, and development of innovative teaching practices.
