Kaitlyn Casanas Receives Special Olympics Miami Community Impact Award

Kaitlyn Casanas, a doctoral candidate in Teaching and Learning at the University of Miami School of Education and Human Development, recently received the Special Olympics Miami Community Impact Award for her transformative work in the special education community.

The award recognizes Casanas's dedication to creating inclusive spaces where students with disabilities thrive beyond traditional classroom settings. Her work bridges competitive athletics and academic research to foster unity and belonging among Miami's special education students.

"What originally sparked my passion for the Special Olympics organization was the vision of my students participating in something greater, a world defined by unity and inclusion," Casanas explains. "Beyond the sports and the competitions, this organization creates a space that fosters friendships that turn into family."

Casanas views the Special Olympics as more than an athletic program. She sees it as a platform where every individual gains recognition and value.

"There is nothing more rewarding than serving a community that believes in a future where every individual is seen, valued, and included," Casanas said. "I'm honored to help lead the way for a more unified generation."

Her research aims to eliminate barriers that limit students' potential. Casanas envisions Miami's special education programs becoming a national model for integrating sports with academic research to build student confidence and lasting relationships.

"My hope is to use my research to break down the barriers that limit the 'endless possibilities' I see in my students every day," Casanas said. "I am dedicated to proving that when we provide opportunities, our students don't just participate, they lead, they inspire, and they redefine what is possible for the next generation."
