John Olah, Frost School’s Associate Professor of the Instrumental Performance department, director of the schools Brass Program, Brass Chamber Music, the Brass Forum, and the Tuba Ensemble passed away July 6, 2018. He taught at the school for 32 years.
Olah once said, “I can honestly say that the Frost School of Music has the most diverse curriculum, hands-on teaching, and up-to-date technology needed to guide students to success in every aspect of the music industry today.”
“The Frost School mourns the passing of John Olah, who for the past 32 years devoted his life to his students. Professor Olah's zeal for teaching was an inspiration to us all, and he will be greatly missed,” said Dean Shelly Berg of the Frost School of Music.
Professor Olah has performed with Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavoratti, Marilyn Horne, Lena Horne, Mel Torme, James Taylor and The Moody Blues. In addition, he has had multiple solo recitals and appearances with leading orchestras and instrumental ensembles throughout the globe.
Olah received many honors and awards, such as Distinguished Alumni Award from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory, and Grammy nominations for “The Rite of Spring” and the “Berlioz Requiem” recordings with the Cleveland Orchestra. He was also an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha.
