The Miami Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Eduardo Marturet will premiere a new composition on Sunday, October 24, 2010 by new Frost School of Music music business faculty member Carlos Rivera entitled "Concierto de Miami," composed especially for jazz trumpet icon Arturo Sandoval.

Rivera compared the inspiration for the work to Joaquin Rodrigo's 1939 "Concierto de Aranjuez," which celebrated the guitar, and most importantly, the music of Spain. "My intention from the inception of this "Concierto de Miami " has been to compose a work that would be reflective of the burgeoning artistic culture that is emanating from South Florida, and accessibly present it to a broader classical audience. Audiences are also expressing a willingness to experience Hispanic music in the concert hall. This piece would offer a much needed voice to Miami’s growing musical culture."

The work is in one movement, with three sections, (Fast, Slow, Fast), and was inspired in part by an eclectic mix of influences, including Rufus Wainwright, Ennio Morriconne, Randy Newman, Radiohead, Resphigi, Piazzolla, Ravel, and Afro Peruvian artists such as Eva Ayllon.
