Shelly Berg to Join Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium Board of Directors

Shelly Berg, pianist and dean of the UM Frost School of Music, tapped to join the board of the Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium, a network to encourage collaboration, shared services and advocacy while building community in Music Education.
Shelton "Shelly" Berg, dean of the University of Miami Frost School of Music, will join the board of directors of the Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium, a national network of music leaders from all parts of the music industry and music education that have joined together to share resources, networks, and their passion to make music an ongoing part of the lives of children in the United States.

With the initial sponsorship of music impresario Quincy Jones, the consortium aims to identify national best practices in music education and outreach programs.

Shelly Berg became the dean of the Frost School of Music in 2007 and shortly after established a new music mentorship program called Frost MusicReach that pairs freshman music majors from the Frost School of Music with musically inclined at-risk teens from South Florida to help nurture their musical and personal development through private music lessons and life coaching for four years each. Each Frost mentor receives a scholarship, primarily funded through private donations.

Berg currently advises the Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium on effective ways to build music outreach programs and has been working on the consortium's outreach committee to examine best practices with such organizations as the Harmony Project, el Sistema USA, Little Kids Rock, and more. As a new board member, Berg will interface closely with the legendary producer Quincy Jones and national music advocate Jeff Walker. Advisory board members include Tony Bennett, Herbie Hancock, and Verve Music Group Chairman Emeritus Tommy LiPuma.
