The String Quartet Celebration will include the Stamps String Quartet (Arianne Urban, Victor Colmenares, Amanda Diaz, Christopher Young), the New Land String Quartet (Beatriz Vera, Hector Hernandez-Perez, Rafael Ramirez, Chia-Li Yu), and the Fernandez String Quartet (Luis Fernandez, Jennifer Shea, Joshua Shepherd, Monica Godbee). They will be performing works from a vast collection of printed string quartet music from the Korn Family String Music Collection, recently donated by sisters Jacqueline Banchik and Robyn Altman in honor of their late father, Bernard J. Korn M.D. In addition to a successful medical career, Dr. Korn was an amateur violinist who enjoyed performing string quartet music throughout his life.
Jacqueline and Howard Banchik and Robyn and Michael Altman are avid music fans and generous supporters of non-profit music organizations including The Harmony Project. Based in Los Angeles, the Banchiks have known the Frost School’s Dean Shelton Berg for over 15 years, and as a result of that association, identified the Marta and Austin Weeks Music Library at the University of Miami as the ideal permanent home for the Korn Family String Music Collection, where it will be used extensively by faculty and students for performance and research. The collection contains hundreds of mint-condition printed music editions of mostly string quartet repertoire, and numerous high quality CD recordings by a wide spectrum of professional string quartets, carefully correlated and indexed by Dr. Korn.
