The University of Miami Frost School of Music will be presenting a String Quartet Celebration on Friday January 28, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. at Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Drive, Coral Gables, FL 33146. The concert is free and open to the public. Exceptional Frost student musicians ranging from freshman to graduate performing artists will be in the spotlight. The concert will feature selected movements from string quartets by Felix Mendelssohn, Ludwig van Beethoven, Bedrich Smetana, Dmitri Shostakovitch, Anton Rubenstein, and Franz Xaver Richter, plus works by Fritz Kreisler, Carlos Gardel, Stephen Foster, and Scott Joplin.

The String Quartet Celebration will include the Stamps String Quartet (Arianne Urban, Victor Colmenares, Amanda Diaz, Christopher Young), the New Land String Quartet (Beatriz Vera, Hector Hernandez-Perez, Rafael Ramirez, Chia-Li Yu), and the Fernandez String Quartet (Luis Fernandez, Jennifer Shea, Joshua Shepherd, Monica Godbee). They will be performing works from a vast collection of printed string quartet music from the Korn Family String Music Collection, recently donated by sisters Jacqueline Banchik and Robyn Altman in honor of their late father, Bernard J. Korn M.D. In addition to a successful medical career, Dr. Korn was an amateur violinist who enjoyed performing string quartet music throughout his life.

Jacqueline and Howard Banchik and Robyn and Michael Altman are avid music fans and generous supporters of non-profit music organizations including The Harmony Project. Based in Los Angeles, the Banchiks have known the Frost School’s Dean Shelton Berg for over 15 years, and as a result of that association, identified the Marta and Austin Weeks Music Library at the University of Miami as the ideal permanent home for the Korn Family String Music Collection, where it will be used extensively by faculty and students for performance and research. The collection contains hundreds of mint-condition printed music editions of mostly string quartet repertoire, and numerous high quality CD recordings by a wide spectrum of professional string quartets, carefully correlated and indexed by Dr. Korn.

Mr. and Mrs. Banchik and Mr. and Mrs. Altman will attend the January 28 String Quartet Celebration to enjoy the premiere of the Korn Family String Music Collection on the campus of the University of Miami Frost School of Music.

The Frost School of Music, one of two schools created in 1926 when the University of Miami was founded, is one of the largest and best music schools located in a private university in the U.S., and one of the most comprehensive in all of higher education. The naming gift from Dr. Phillip and Patricia Frost was one of the historic highlights in the life of the School. Building on its foundation as a Conservatory of Music, the Frost School has pioneered new curricula and was the first in the nation to offer professionally accredited bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music Business and Music Engineering Technology. The Frost School was also among the first to offer degrees in Studio Music and Jazz, Music Therapy, and Accompanying and Chamber Music. In addition, the Frost School was the first in a major university to develop a student-run label, ‘Cane Records, and a publishing company, Category Five. The School’s innovative programs, combined with its traditional areas of concentration, offer its students one of the widest choices of career programs of any music school in the nation. The Frost School continues to lead, having recently established a new songwriting degree; the “Bruce Hornsby Creative American Music Program.” Also, the world-renowned Henry Mancini Institute has relocated from Los Angeles to the Frost School. music.miami.edu.
