The 2011 TMEA Clinic/Convention features workshops for band, orchestra, vocal, elementary and college educators; concerts by the outstanding musicians, and two exhibit halls filled with booths representing all facets of the music education industry. The convention closes with performances by All-State ensembles comprising the best high school musicians in the state.
Featured workshops at TMEA included several by visiting artist, Mark O’Connor, who presented on subjects regarding string performance and classroom teaching methods. Frost’s own freshman Stamps String Quartet acted as the featured performing group for these panels. Professor Serona Elton presented a session on key legal aspects that affect the music educator such as “Copyright Basics” and “Uses of Music and Legal Implications.” Other conference presentations included “Enhancing Music Teacher Training” lead by Edward Asmus, panels on choreography and music selection for younger choral students lead by alumna Sally Albrecht, “The Beginning Band Musician” with alumnus Brian Balmages, and a special presentation by Dean Shelly Berg and visiting professor John Stewart entitled, “The Experiential Curriculum”, which lays foundations for reform in the way music is taught in higher education. The convention concluded with performances by the TMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble, TMEA All-State Women’s Choir and TMEA All-State 5A Symphonic Band conducted by Dean Shelton Berg, Joshua Habermann and Gary Green, respectively. A reception for Frost School of Music Alumni was held on Saturday to strengthen relationships and rapport between Frost faculty and alumni.
