The University of Miami Frost School of Music and the Cleveland Orchestra have teamed up again this year during the Orchestra’s seasonal residency in Miami. Students from the Frost School are receiving coaching and hearing their compositions performed by these talented professional musicians.

The Cleveland Orchestra has several ongoing collaborations with the Frost SOM. On March 1st, Frost students attended an open rehearsal at the Arsht Center, along with other area schools. On March 2nd, several key master classes were presented by musicians of The Cleveland Orchestra on the campus of the University of Miami. Organized by their respective Frost faculty member, these consisted of a violin masterclass with Augustin Hadelich, a horn masterclass with Hans Clebsch, and an oboe masterclass with Jeff Rathbun.

In addition, The Cleveland Orchestra collaborated with MusicReach, a program funded and coordinated by University of Miami Frost School of Music, in partnership with Arts for Learning and the Greater Miami Youth Symphony (GMYS), to bring thirty students and mentors from the GMYS and Frost School of Music to the Orchestra’s performance at the Arsht Center on March 4th. For many of the young musicians, it was their first opportunity to attend a live professional orchestral concert.

Also on March 4th, composition students at the Frost School had the opportunity to hear a trio of Cleveland Orchestra musicians - Joela Jones, Richard Weiss, and Peter Otto - read through new works and offer valuable feedback from the point of view of professional orchestra members and seasoned musicians. A concert will be held on Saturday, April 9th at 10:00 a.m. in the Henry Fillmore Band Hall, with the Cleveland Orchestra performing these student’s compositions. The concert is open to the public and free of charge.

The Cleveland Orchestra will host a number of additional master classes on the Frost School of Music campus the week of April 6 for the benefit of Frost students. Master classes for clarinet with Frank Cohen, bassoon with John Clouser, trombone with Massimo La Rosa, tuba with Yasuhito Sugiyama, percussion with Tom Freer and string quartet master class with Amy Lee will all commence on April 6th, followed by master classes for viola with Lynne Ramsey and cello with Richard Weiss on April 8th.
