The Cleveland Orchestra & Frost School Announce Composition Collaboration Winners

The Frost School of Music Dept. of Music Composition & Theory and The Cleveland Orchestra announce the winners of the 2016/17 Frost/TCO Composition Collaboration.

The Frost School of Music Dept. of Music Composition & Theory and The Cleveland Orchestra announce the winners of the 2016/17 Frost/TCO Composition Collaboration:

Dylan Findley (b.1991): strengthen the body/enliven the soul (2016)

Julián Brijaldo (b.1983): Anatomy of Sur (2016)

On January 31st, a chamber quintet comprised of members of The Cleveland Orchestra led by Associate Conductor Brett Mitchell gave a reading session of six works composed for the ensemble by Frost student composers. Following the session, Maestro Mitchell and the members of The Cleveland Orchestra selected two winning works, which will be premiered at the Arsht Center in March.

Mr. Brijaldo’s and Mr. Findley’s works will be premiered at 7pm “Prelude Concerts” preceding Cleveland Orchestra concerts on Fri., March 24th and Sat., March 25th. Both works will be performed both nights.

This project is the tenth such collaboration between The Cleveland Orchestra Miami and the Frost School of Music Dept. of Composition & Theory. It is truly a unique program unlike any other in the country, and a significant

opportunity for young composers at the Frost School of Music.

Composer bios:

Julián Brijaldo (b.1983) grew up surrounded by folk and popular music from different regions in Colombia, having his first experiences writing music as an arranger of his father's salsa orchestra. He is pursuing his DMA in Composition at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. Brijaldo also holds a MM from Florida Atlantic University and a BM from Universidad Javeriana, where he taught Music Theory from 2009 to 2013. Through his work, he has been able to channel both passions for music theory and traditional music. His awards include the 2017 Presser Graduate Award, an Honorable Mention in the Colombian Composition Prize, and the UM Concerto Competition. Future performances and commissions include his solo violin piece Atravesa’o at the SCI National Conference, and participation as Composer-in-Residence at the FredBrass Institute 2017, a guitar concerto for Miami-based Guitarist Rafael Padrón, and a flute-piano piece for LAtiNA Duo in New York City.

Dylan Findley (b.1991) writes music to as a sacred act of expressing intangible truths through emotion. He has been awarded commissions by the Barlow Endowment, New American Voices, American Guild of Organists

Student Commissioning Project, the 2016 Atlantic Music Festival Contemporary Ensemble, and the Barlow Student Composition Award. He wrote for the 2015 Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival and participated in the 2014

Beijing Modern Music Festival. He is currently writing for the PULSE Trio and the Transamerican Duo and will write for Transient Canvas for the 2017 ALBA Music Festival. He currently studies with Lansing McLoskey at the University of Miami, where he is finishing his Master’s degree in Composition. www.dylanfindley.com
