Dmitrii is one of three new winners among the over 250 applicants to the competition. He became the fourth percussionist in the world who has won the prestigious CAG Award and the first percussionist in that last 15 years after his former Frost professor, Svet Stoyanov, won the same award. Dmitrii was accompanied on piano by Frost Alumna, Asiya Korepanova, during the final rounds.
He was proudly accepted to the Frost School of Music as a scholar of the Percussion Department in 2011 and received his Bachelor’s degree in May 2016. He studied under the tutelage of professor Svet Stoyanov, the Director and Associate Professor of Percussion Studies, and Matthew Strauss. Needless to say, Dmitrii’s performing skills and experiences have been greatly enriched under the guidance of both of them. He shared, “They are two of the greatest musicians and artists in the world who opened a completely new world to me. They are my favorite musicians.”
Dmitrii also expressed his gratitude to the Frost School of Music, “The Frost School of Music meant absolutely everything to me, as it was the first school I went to in the USA. I have always been grateful for everyone and everything that it provided me.”
Dmitrii’s performances have graced many prestigious venues, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, Great Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonia, Mariinsky Theater Concert Hall, and the New World Center in Miami. As an advocate for new music, Dmitrii has been working very closely with many great artists and composers. We can only look forward as to what is to come from Dmitrii Nilov.
