The intersection of law, innovation, and artificial intelligence is no longer a distant frontier—it’s the current reality of the legal profession. On February 20, the University of Miami’s Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC), hosted a session in the AI Virtual Lecture Series featuring Professor Andres Sawicki.

Sawicki, a renowned expert in intellectual property and the economics of innovation, led the session titled "Exploring Practical Applications." The lecture aimed to demystify how generative AI is reshaping the landscape for legal professionals, researchers, and creators.

Rather than focusing solely on theoretical ethics, Sawicki pivoted toward the tangible tools and methodologies that are currently being integrated into legal workflows.

The lecture highlighted several critical areas where AI is making an immediate impact:

  • Legal Research and Drafting: How large language models (LLMs) can accelerate document review and initial drafting while maintaining rigorous accuracy standards.
  • Intellectual Property Challenges: Navigating the complex "gray areas" of copyright law when AI is used to generate creative or technical content.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Leveraging IDSC’s computing power to analyze vast datasets for legal trends and litigation outcomes.

Sawicki, a professor of law and director of the Business of Innovation, Law, and Technology Concentration (BILT), teaches in the area of intellectual property. His primary research projects explore the extent to which IP can help solve problems in the production of inventions and expressive works.
