As part of the University of Miami School of Law's ongoing commitment to student success, well-being, and professional development, Michael J. States has been appointed the school's inaugural Associate Dean for Student Services & Support and Dean of Students.
The creation of this new leadership role reflects Miami Law's commitment to supporting students throughout their legal education—from orientation to graduation, bar preparation, and career launch.
In his new role, States will oversee several key student-facing departments and work collaboratively across the law school to enhance the student experience. He will help drive a unified, student-centered approach that supports academic excellence, professional identity formation, leadership development, and a strong sense of community.
“Stepping into this inaugural role at the University of Miami School of Law is an incredible honor because it unites critical pillars of the student journey under a single, holistic vision. By bringing student services, academic achievement, the registrar, bar success, and more together, we can offer a seamless ecosystem of support,” says States.
States brings extensive experience advancing student success and engagement in legal education. He most recently served as Associate Dean for Student Success and Inclusive Excellence at the University of Wisconsin Law School. Earlier in his career, he held senior leadership positions in admissions, financial aid, and student services at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, the University of North Carolina School of Law, and the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law.
“Michael brings a remarkable track record of empowering students to thrive academically, professionally, and personally,” says Dean Patricia Sanchez Abril. “His leadership reflects our mission to place student success and support at the center of the Miami Law experience, and we are thrilled to welcome him.”
A nationally recognized leader in legal education, States has also played an active role in shaping the profession through service with organizations including the Association of American Law Schools, the American Bar Association, the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education, the Law School Admission Council, and the Council for Legal Education Opportunity.
Throughout his career, States has focused on creating environments that foster belonging, engagement, achievement, and long-term student success.
