The CaneStage Theatre Company will host on Monday Shakespeare On The Patio.

The CaneStage Theatre Company, a student organization committed to making the performance arts available to all students, will host its first nonmusical production on Monday with Shakespeare On The Patio, which will have an open-mic format.

During the event, which will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the Lakeside Patio, Shakespeare’s words will be up for interpretation. Students are invited to dance to a monologue or sing a sonnet, as long as their performance references the famous playwright’s work.

“Shakespeare is such a universal person. We wanted to do a University of Miami take of New York City’s Shakespeare in the Park,” said Jordan Julien, a senior studying public relations and the chair for CaneStage Theatre Company.

The event is the first of its kind for the group, which provides students of all majors and disciplines the opportunity to participate in student-run theatre, dance, and other performing arts.

The open mic welcomes any student with a ’Cane Card. Performers are encouraged to get creative and think outside the box.

“We’ll have giveaways and food from Vicky Bakery, and it’s fun to see your fellow students performing,” Julien noted. “We are taking a trip back in time to the artistry of the era by writing ourselves love letters.”

Although it is an open mic, students also can sign up on the group’s Instagram page to audition.
