As cities face increasingly complex challenges, architects are turning to innovation and collaboration to develop solutions. Faculty members and students at the University of Miami School of Architecture explain how social, environmental, and economic factors influence every design decision, from individual structures to entire cities. In designing cities that account for these factors, architects are increasingly involved in interdisciplinary strategies that bring together engineers, community leaders, and environmental experts. Through a University project, an interdisciplinary team of faculty members is using large-format concrete 3D printing to develop seawalls, providing a possible solution to prevent erosion in coastal regions.
To highlight the convergence of these factors, a team of faculty members, supported by students working on a streetscape design, collaborated with a local nonprofit to implement a two-way protected bicycle lane, illustrating how community engagement provides the framework for sustainable and resilient urban planning.
