Greek Week is a beloved tradition in which all chapters within the Association of Greek Life Organizations (AGLO) come together to compete in friendly activities and challenges for a united cause. This year, Greek Week partnered with Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC) – the largest fundraising initiative for the NFLs Miami Dolphins. The DCC annually partners with University of Miami’s Sylester Comprehensive Cancer Center in raising funds for lifesaving cancer research. The DCCs main event on February 28 at Hard Rock Stadium featured walking, running, and cycling challenges for participants, which is where this year's Greek Week concluded.
"I have been communicating with the DCC for months, brainstorming strategies about how to make this happen,” said Hallie Sussner, the chair of philanthropy for Greek Week.
The DCC has been working to get students involved since they began their fundraising over a decade ago. Sussner saw an incredible opportunity to make that happen, coordinating with all Greek organizations to unite for this cause.
“It is important for me to partner with a non-profit like DCC as Head of Philanthropy because I know first-hand the effect of something like cancer on families. My mom had breast cancer and I have vowed to make an extreme difference in the world of cancer research and care ever since," Sussner adds.
Before the week even started, Greek Life students raised over $11,000 in t-shirt sales, which were designed by AGLO Chair, Parker Osth.
Erin Kobetz, Associate Director for Community Outreach and Engagement, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, is thrilled about the participation from Greek Organizations on campus as its increased awareness for the DCC and their partnership with Sylvester. “DCC and the funds they raise annually support research that would not otherwise be possible, leading to better prevention strategies, treatments, and the possibility of a cure,” she shared.
The main thing that unites all Greek Organizations at the U is philanthropy, which is why partnering with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center makes this experience all the more meaningful – they are making an impact locally. This year, Greek Week engaged over 1,000 students to raise over $30,000.
“Throughout Greek Week, [students involved in Greek Life] dedicate time, energy, and resources to fundraising, and working with DCC allows them to see the tangible outcome of that commitment,” said Jordan Chiarelli, Assistant Director of Greek Life.
