Welcome back ’Canes! Fall 2024 is finally here after a summer of construction and new email systems, we are excited to be back and starting the academic semester. When school is not in session, sometimes you just need to completely check out. Want to know what you missed?
- Last month, the long-anticipated demolition of Stanford Residential College had finally arrived. While in the process of saying goodbye, Stanford's two iconic towers, Rosborough and Walsh, threw up one last U as there was a moment in the midst of saying goodbye where the debris was formed in the shape of our iconic U. It was the perfect send off for the towers after decades of standing tall for the University community.
- Centennial Village opened its doors! In August, the long-awaited opening of Centennial Village was a success! With two new residential towers, Coral and Ibis, and a brand-new two-story dining hall, Centennial opened its doors to the Class of 2028. Within just days of opening its doors, the residential colleges were named one of ‘The most epic College dorms in the country’ by House Beautiful magazine.
- The Miami Hurricanes football team has been hard at work getting ranked in the top 25 to start their season. After having the number 1 recruiting class in the ACC, the Hurricanes are hoping to bring the heat behind new quarterback Cam Ward. Hurricanes football is back next weekend for their first game against the University of Florida Gators. If you want to catch the game with some friends, the Rathskeller will be hosting a watch party at 3 p.m. on August 31.
Now that you're up-to-date, let’s get into the spirit of opening campus for students, families, faculty, and alumni. 'Cane Kickoff orientation set the bar high for an amazing semester with a ton of orientation events for new and transfer students! Sebastian the Ibis stole the show during events like ’Canes Take Flight, ’Canes Bash, and the President’s Celebration. New students were able to take on all that Miami has to offer from student clubs and organizations, to food options, and academic resources. Departments across the University made a point to greet new students and remind them of all the options they have for health, safety, wellness, tutoring, and more. Each event was carefully crafted to let new students acclimate to their new University family!
The upper classman students returned to campus last week moving into residential spaces like Eaton Residential College, Lakeside Village, and University Village. While some students were settling in, other student leaders helped facilitate events to show off their clubs and organizations. Senior, Morgan Scola is President of the largest, most popular club on campus, Scuba Club. With the unique opportunity of living right by some of the best scuba diving sites in the country, this club partners with a local dive shop to offer open water diver certifications and a variety of weekly dives. The club has, on average, 1,800 student members each semester. "Orientation week is super busy for UM Scuba Club. We get to welcome returning members back to campus and host events to tell new students about the awesome opportunities we offer. I am working with shops all over South Florida to set up a successful semester—planning weekly dives, organizing guest speakers, and ordering merch for dues-paying members. I have spent hours this summer getting things ready for the semester, but I wouldn't have it any other way," said Scola.
With the chaos of 'Cane Kickoff coming to an end and students starting to sette into a routine, campus is gearing up for all the excitement that's to come. With Family Weekend just around the corner and Alumni Weekend and Homecoming Week soon after, the excitement is filling the air. Let’s get this semester started, 'Canes!
