While you may be able to apply some of the same strategies you developed as a student earning your bachelor’s degree, you will face different challenges, like time management and balancing a career, as an online student.
The following six practical study strategies will help you succeed in your next online class.
Set up a good workspace.
Determine your priorities and find a few locations, like a café or library, which allows you to focus. At home, carve out space where you can keep the noise to a minimum and have plenty of room to spread out course materials.
Review the technology and syllabus upfront.
Scan for required readings, learn how often you’ll be expected to post in the classroom, and note important due dates for tests, quizzes, and assignments. Come prepared with questions for the first discussion or virtual office hours.
Plan ahead.
Write down deadlines and goals where you’ll see them every day, such as in a weekly planner or on your phone’s calendar. If you're a procrastinator, be honest with yourself so you can stay on top of upcoming assignments. Review the syllabus regularly to avoid any surprises toward the end of the semester.
Create a consistent study schedule.
Are you an early riser? Plan to wake up early to complete your coursework. Night owls, set aside time in the evenings to get things done before you get into bed. Find out what works for you and stick to it.
Set expectations at home.
Work with your family and friends so they know when you’ll be “off-limits” and dedicated to your courses. If times dovetail, ask your kids to mirror their study time after yours. When you do schedule time with family and friends, be sure to give them your full attention so you can enjoy their company when you’re not focused on your studies.
Check-in every day.
Make it a habit. Checking the online classroom daily means you won't miss an important announcement or assignment.
Keep in mind that study strategies that work well for one student aren’t necessarily the best way for all students to approach their education. Experiment with varying tactics until you develop a routine that fits your particular coursework and study habits.
