The faculty who teach the University of Miami’s online course come from different backgrounds and are experts in vastly different fields. However they all have one key character trait in common: they share a deep sense of responsibility for equipping students with the tools needed to be successful. In a new series of blog posts, we will be putting a spotlight on faculty members from different UOnline graduate programs. Meet Professor Joe Genovese, CPA.

Joe Genovese joined the University of Miami faculty in 2015 as an adjunct professor of accounting and auditing. He currently teaches Auditing (ACC 686) to students in the Master of Professional Accounting program, a course that he also helped develop.

“Even though these students are at the graduate level, many haven’t been exposed to an auditing course. We want to give them a basic introduction to the auditing profession and auditing services. By the end of the course they should be able to understand how to audit a financial statement for both public and privately held companies.” Students have the benefit of learning from Prof. Genovese’s decades of experience, which includes 38 years as a partner and consultant with Ernst & Young and working in the Inspection Division of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. Among his areas of expertise are merger and acquisition, due diligence services, ethics and independence, and accounting and auditing advice.

Prof. Genovese has worked both domestically and internationally, living in Buffalo, N.Y., Boston, Washington, D.C., Miami, and Brazil. His experience spans a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, real estate, financial services, beverage, pharmaceutical, construction, retail and wholesale, government, and not-for-profit. In addition to his work as an adjunct professor and consultant, he is a frequent public speaker on various accounting, capital markets, transaction advisory, and ethics and independence topics. While he has taught at his alma mater, Niagara University, as well as Suffolk University School of Management, teaching online was new for Prof. Genovese. He is impressed with the commitment of UOnline students, most of whom have full-time jobs in addition to their coursework. He encourages students to email him with questions, and checks in with all his students periodically throughout the course.

“I also try to make sure that students are able to easily submit their assignments and get things corrected right away with feedback. I am here to help the students.” Prof. Genovese is currently a licensed CPA in Florida, Massachusetts, and New York. He knows that his students want practical knowledge they can put to work immediately. “I hope what they learn in my class helps them pass the CPA exam and helps them with their career. This course is especially beneficial for students who want to become a CPA or work at the corporate level in a financial position.”
