Earlier this month, faculty from UOnline’s Master of Education - Sport Administration program traveled to Brazil to explore collaborative opportunities with some of the top sport organizations in the country, the largest in South America and one known for its rich history of sports.

Professors Warren Whisenant, Chair of the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences, Windy Dees, and Tywan Martin were invited to meet with members of several sport organizations including Sada Cruzeiro, Brazil’s leading professional men’s volleyball team; Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, the most popular soccer team in Brazil; and Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, another popular soccer team.

The idea for the trip was brought to Prof. Whisenant earlier this year by a recent graduate of UOnline’s MSED –Sport Administration program, Marcelo Claudino. The Brazilian entrepreneur is the CEO and founder of TopConsulting, a financial advising firm that specializes in serving professional athletes. Given his extensive industry experience and his ongoing commitment to the University of Miami, Claudino is also a founding member of the Sport Industry Leadership Council (SILC).

The trip to Brazil was a resounding success in helping to further the missions of SILC and UOnline, which include expanding UM’s reputation and influence globally as the premier institution for developing future leaders in the sport industry and offering students as many networking, learning, and mentoring opportunities as possible. All of the Brazilian organizations were very receptive to collaborating with UM and the MSED -Sport Administration program.

“The faculty are excited about the international engagement opportunity working with these organizations will provide,” said Prof. Whisenant.

It was not all work and no play for the UM faculty in Brazil, however. Their itinerary also included a visit to Corcovado, site of the iconic mountain-top Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking Rio, as well as the famous Copacabana Beach, a tour of the city of Belo Horizonte, and attending a finals game of the Brazilian Volleyball Super League (“Superliga” in Portuguese.)
