James Wilson: Unconventional beginnings and a passion for marine life

When James was in fourth grade, a teacher helped him discover what would become a passion for marine life. Now a student at Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, James studies marine science and biology.

"My mom told me straight out - and it didn't need to be said - that I could not go to college unless I had everything completely covered."

James Wilson's upbringing was a bit unconventional. Growing up in housing programs for women and children who escaped domestic violence. When James was in fourth grade, a teacher helped him discover what would become a passion for marine life. Now a student at Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, James is studying marine science and biology, but without the access to a scholarship, his time at the U would never have happened.
