The road to robes: One graduate's journey to the bench

Heloiza Correa, J.D. '09, the newly elected judge of the Florida 11th Circuit Court, brings a wealth of legal experience to the bench. With a background that spans criminal law prosecution and civil litigation, she has resolved a diverse array of cases throughout her career. Correa's commitment to justice is rooted in her personal values, influenced significantly by her mother’s inspiring resilience.

What inspired you to pursue a career in law, and how did your early experiences shape your journey to becoming a judge?

My journey into law was sparked during high school when I was in a civics class, watching a Law and Order-type show, followed by a mock trial. At that moment, I knew I wanted to become a trial lawyer, and I felt a strong pull toward public service. Throughout high school, I took pre-law courses, and in college, I focused my studies on subjects that would prepare me for law school.

My aspiration to eventually become a judge took shape during my time as a certified legal intern at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s office. It was there that I truly witnessed the profound impact a judge can have on the lives of those who appear before them. I was fortunate enough to work with a judge who exemplified patience, preparedness, and a genuine commitment to ensuring that everyone in the courtroom understood the process. This experience solidified my ambition to one day serve as a judge and make a similar impact in the lives of others.

In what ways did your education at the University of Miami School of Law prepare you for the challenges you face on the bench?

My education at the University of Miami School of Law played a crucial role in preparing me for the challenges I now face on the bench. It helped me develop the confidence and skills necessary for litigating cases, providing me with a solid foundation of legal knowledge to support my decisions. Specifically, the Litigation Skills Program, combined with my evidence class, was instrumental in shaping my abilities as both a trial attorney and, now, as a judge. These experiences equipped me with the practical tools and deep understanding needed to approach cases with the expertise and confidence required on the bench.

Can you outline the key factors that contributed to your victory in the primary election for the Florida 11th Circuit Court in 2024?

The election process was both humbling and demanding, but I approached it with the same dedication I apply to my legal work—putting in everything I had and ensuring I had no regrets. I began campaigning a year and a half before the election, immersing myself in the legal community and attending various events to connect with the attorneys of the Miami-Dade Bar. I made it a point to engage with as many people as possible, listening to their thoughts and learning what they hoped to see from the bench.

In addition to building relationships with legal professionals, I campaigned extensively in the community, attending events, hosting smaller gatherings, and even knocking on hundreds of doors to meet constituents. However, the success of my campaign wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support of my family, friends, and dedicated team. From my mother, who made Brazilian sweets from scratch for events, to friends volunteering to knock on doors or distribute materials, every act of support counted. Additionally, I had an amazing group of family and friends who—now considered extended family—spent long hours in the sun during early voting, manning multiple voting sites.

This victory was truly a team effort. The tireless work and strategic planning from my consulting team, coupled with their commitment to ensuring that I gave everything I had to this campaign, were critical to our success. It’s a dream realized thanks to their unwavering support.

How has your diverse legal background in both criminal prosecution and civil litigation influenced your approach to your role as a judge?

My diverse legal background in both criminal prosecution and civil litigation has given me a broader perspective when approaching cases as a judge. Whether handling serious criminal cases like murder, complex multi-million-dollar business disputes, or representing a litigant pro bono in an eviction action, my experience with a wide range of cases allows me to consider each one from a holistic point of view. I recognize that while some cases may seem more severe than others, to each litigant, their case is often life-altering. This understanding shapes how I approach my role, ensuring that I give each matter the attention and respect it deserves.

Additionally, my varied experience has provided me with valuable trial skills, enabling me to resolve cases efficiently and fairly. My goal is always to ensure timely access to the courts and provide litigants with a fair and just process, regardless of the nature of their case.

What role has your mother played in your life, and how has her influence shaped your commitment to justice and community service?

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have been raised by a strong, selfless, and independent woman—my mother, Maria Cristina Correa. She always put my sisters and me first, ensuring that we received the best education and upbringing, no matter the obstacles life threw her way. It was her vision and determination that led our family to move from Brazil to the United States, so my sisters and I could have the opportunity to fully embrace the American Dream. My father, wise enough to recognize her wisdom, supported this decision, and the rest is history.

Growing up, my parents instilled in us the importance of doing what was right, not only for ourselves but for the greater community. My mother’s unwavering commitment to our success and her deep sense of social responsibility have profoundly shaped my own commitment to justice and community service. She has been my greatest influence, teaching me the value of selflessness and the impact one can have when striving to make a difference in the lives of others.
