Across our campuses, students are turning their passion into purpose. They restore coral reefs, mentor young musicians, report on stories that matter, provide legal services, train service dogs, and enter healing professions. Through Canes for a Cause, you can expand the reach and impact of these programs, and many more.
Launched in 2024, this annual campaign highlights select University of Miami initiatives that are making a difference in people’s lives.
These programs form part of the University’s fabric, with students doing their part to make a positive impact and advance the promise of our new century. Annual support from alumni and friends of the U is essential for that purpose.

Donna E. Shalala MusicReach: Making music education accessible
Thousands of young people in Miami-Dade County have experienced the joy and power of music—and Frost School of Music students have honed their teaching and mentoring skills—through the Donna E. Shalala MusicReach program. Young musicians gain skills and confidence, while Frost students grow as leaders.
Law Clinics: Real-world cases, real-world impact
The School of Law’s nine clinics offer students an immersive opportunity to build transferable lawyering skills while representing actual clients in bankruptcy, immigration, investor rights, human rights, and other proceedings. Students serve as lead attorneys—advocating, managing cases, shaping policy, and serving the community.
Rescue a Reef: Bringing coral reefs back to life
Scientists and students at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science are bringing coral reefs back to life through coral farming, reef planting, and hands-on science adventures. Rescue a Reef is the centerpiece of an ongoing effort to preserve and restore South Florida’s coral reefs.
The Miami Hurricane: Keeping our campus connected
The Miami Hurricane has been the premier voice of the U’s students since its founding in 1929. Edited and produced by undergraduate students and the winner of numerous awards, The Miami Hurricane covers campus and community stories that matter.
UPup: Training future service dogs
At UPup, Canes train future service dogs, build leadership skills, and demonstrate the power of building connections in our community. The program gives students the skills, dogs the purpose, and deserving people the help they need to thrive.
White Coats for Nursing: A symbol of compassion and care
The White Coat Ceremony marks the moment future nurses transition into the clinical phase of their education with compassion, professionalism, and care. Annual support provides the coats that symbolize this calling and inspires the next generation of Cane caregivers.
Join our movement and help us make a difference, one instrument, one case, one coral, one story, one pup, one coat, and one student at a time.
