Once a Cane, always a Cane: Golden Ibis Society to host Homecoming breakfast

The Golden Ibis Society may have turned 50 last year, but its members feel just as young as the day they graduated when they reunite.

Started in 1975 by the late Ruth Linder Sutton, B.A. ’30, to bring together the classes of 1926 to 1936, the Golden Ibis Society continues to forge strong connections and an enduring love of alma mater that spans decades and generations of Canes.

Not only has the society been instrumental in digitizing IBIS yearbooks going back to the graduating class of 1927, but it also hosts an annual celebration during Alumni Weekend and Homecoming to bring together new generations of Canes.

On Saturday, Nov. 8, the society will host its Homecoming breakfast, where alumni who graduated 50 or more years ago are invited to gather, reminisce, reconnect, and celebrate the legacy, traditions, and spirit that Miami Hurricanes share. Emmy Award-winning sports commentator Roy Firestone, B.A. ’75, will serve as host alongside featured guest Sebastian the Ibis.

“Being inducted into the Golden Ibis Society was one of the proudest moments of my 52-year journey with the University of Miami,” Mitchell Shapiro, B.A. ’74, said. “At last year’s Homecoming breakfast, I spent the morning with old friends, many of whom I had not seen in a while, and it was fun to be a part of such an enjoyable morning. This year, I look forward to welcoming a new group of Canes.”

“My daughter graduated from the University of Miami in 2009, and she is tired of me saying ‘When I was at Miami …’” said Michael Friedman, B.B.A. ’74. “That’s what’s nice about the Golden Ibis Society—everyone says, ‘Back when I was at Miami,’ and we’re all excited to remember, connect, and reconnect.”
