Ali Ghahremaninezhad, an assistant professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAE), has received a five-year, $500,000 CAREER award.

The research project is titled, “CAREER: Bio-Inspired Genetically Engineered Self-Healing for Sustainable Cementitious Materials.”

Ghahremaninezhad and his team have been working together, focusing on structures and properties of cementitious materials at different length scales. This work is aimed at discovering the underlying mechanisms of a genetic engineering methodology for the self-healing of cementitious materials. Ghahremaninezhad’s research is at the intersection of engineering mechanics, materials science, chemistry and biochemistry. He has collaborated with chemists and biologists within and outside UM.

“Dr. Ghahremaninezhad’s groundbreaking research will contribute to public safety and benefit the infrastructure industries by improving the durability and reducing maintenance cost of infrastructures,” said Jean-Pierre Bardet, dean of the UMCoE.

“It is an honor to receive such a prestigious award, which further encouraged interdisciplinary research to engineer innovative infrastructure materials with enhanced durability and sustainability performance,” said Ghahremaninezhad. “This research will greatly impact the future of engineering, civil and architectural education.”

NSF CAREER Awards are prestigious and competitive awards given to junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholar through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their respective organizations.
