Congratulations to Prannoy Suraneni (ACCESS Lab), assistant professor in the College of Engineering’s (CoE) Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAE), who has been nominated as an American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International Emerging Professional. The ASTM International Emerging Professional program nominates the sharpest minds in a wide array of industries who have demonstrated the potential to be a leader in their field.
Suraneni will attend the ASTM International Emerging Professionals workshop taking place in Denver, Colorado from June 3-4. The trip will feature a daylong program hosted by members and staff that provide a comprehensive introduction to ASTM International and its standards development process as well as leadership training from a professional moderator.
“The objective of the Emerging Professionals program is simple: to create an opportunity with long-term benefits for new members who have demonstrated the potential to be industry and committee leaders,” says Katerina Koperna, administrator of the program.
To help technical committees continue to engage future generations of experts, ASTM launched the Emerging Professionals program in 2015 and continues to expand the program. This year, Jason H. Ideker, an associate professor in the School of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State University, nominated Suraneni to join the roster of ASTM Emerging Professionals.
For more than 100 years, ASTM International has served as a definitive resource for standards professionals worldwide. After recognizing that many highly-engaged, experienced members were retiring—a familiar phenomenon in the organizational landscape—ASTM staff developed a strategy that both addressed this succession planning challenge and ensured the continued strength of their organization and its mission.
“We want young professionals to engage with ASTM staff earlier in their careers,” says Koperna. “Through the Emerging Professionals program, we hope to create a network for future leaders in all areas of standards development.”
