Graduate Student Association Recognizes Decorated Engineering PhD Candidate

Alvaro Ruiz Emparanza, a PhD candidate in the University of Miami College of Engineering Department of Civil Engineering, was awarded with the Academic Excellence, Leadership and Service Award at the 2018 Graduate Student Association (GSA) awards banquet.

The award reflects Alvaro’s outstanding academic performance, as well as his leadership skills. He has presented his research at numerous professional and technical conferences, both nationally and internationally.

Currently, Alvaro is an active member throughout the University of Miami (UM) community serving numerous leadership roles including vice-president and incoming president of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Student Chapter, treasurer and incoming president of the Graduate Engineering Student Council (GESC), GSA senator for Civil Engineering, and team leader on multiple projects within the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) organization.

Alvaro’s pro-active attitude extends beyond the UM community where he professionally participates in the ACI Committee at the national level, leading significant efforts to engage students globally to learn more about the concrete industry. Specifically, he was key for the foundation of the ACI student Chapter in the Dominican Republic.

Furthermore, Alvaro has raised funds to support three undergraduate students in attending an international concrete conference where the students won first place at a state competition in Orlando — the first time this is achieved by the student organization.
