Meet our Graduates is an occasional series of profiles of successful UOnline alumni.
Why did you choose the University of Miami and UOnline?
Having received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Miami through in-person programs, I had no doubt that UOnline would continue to offer the same incredible experience.
As a professional dedicated to addressing systemic inequities and advocacy, I wanted a program that combined academic excellence with real-world application. The flexibility of UOnline allowed me to balance my professional responsibilities while advancing my education. The University of Miami’s reputation and strong network also made it the ideal choice for my career goals.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
The ability to immediately apply what I was learning to my work was invaluable. The program (offered through the School of Education and Human Development) was designed for professionals like me who needed practical, actionable knowledge. I also appreciated the diverse perspectives of my classmates, many of whom were working professionals in leadership roles across different industries.
What was one of the biggest lessons you learned?
Adaptability and strategic thinking are critical in leadership. The coursework reinforced the importance of data-driven decision-making and systemic analysis—both of which have shaped how I approach policy advocacy and program development in my current role.
Additionally, the program deepened my understanding of trauma-informed frameworks, allowing me to approach leadership and organizational change with a lens of resilience and well-being.
How have you used what you learned in your career?
Every day. Whether it's crafting policy recommendations, engaging stakeholders, or managing an advocacy board, my education at UOnline has equipped me with the analytical tools and leadership strategies I rely on to drive meaningful change in Miami-Dade County.
One of the most significant ways I’ve applied what I learned is through my continued work in trauma-informed leadership. The opportunity to develop and implement a trauma-informed framework in Orange County Public Schools during my doctoral studies was instrumental. That experience has shaped how I now promote trauma-informed practices in a community setting, ensuring that advocacy efforts are grounded in an understanding of resilience, equity, and systemic change.
Favorite class or experience?
The interactive elements of the program—case studies, live sessions, and collaborative projects—were particularly impactful in refining my approach to leadership and advocacy. However, my favorite experience was the opportunity to implement a trauma-informed framework in Orange County Public Schools.
Collaborating with educators and stakeholders to develop a sustainable, trauma-responsive framework was incredibly meaningful. This real-world application reinforced the importance of systemic change in education and advocacy, and I continue to use that experience to inform my work in promoting trauma-informed practices within community initiatives.
