The nine-month fellowship aims to attract emerging individuals engaged in design practice and/or research to join the U-SoA academic community and contribute to the intellectual life of the School.
“Fellowships are a way to build, expand and enhance the intellectual and creative community of our School,” said Carie Penabad, director of the Bachelor of Architecture program at U-SoA. “There’s a two-way synergy to great fellowship programs; the individual brings new ideas to our School, but they also learn from the faculty and students who are here.”
Discussion of creating the Fellowship began shortly after Dean Rodolphe el-Khoury joined U-SoA, Penabad said. A committee comprised of Penabad and Professor Katherine Wheeler as co-chairs, with professors Germane Barnes, Adib Cure and Joaquim Perez researched how other fellowship programs are run and created the job description and framework for the program.
The new fellow will be expected to teach two studio courses and one elective. “In order to maximize student exposure to the fellow, we plan for him or her to teach a core curriculum studio one semester, and then an upper level studio the next,” Penabad said. “We hope that provides for the highest amount of interaction between the fellow and the students.”
Additionally, the fellow will be able to engage and interact with the public, through a lecture or talk and potentially an exhibition, depending on the person’s background and interests. “We want students to be able to see and hear this person’s research work or design work outside the classroom,” Penabad said.
The fellowship was framed as an “Emerging Practitioner” fellowship focused on research and/or design in order to highlight the U-SoA’s dual commitment to research and practice, Penabad explained. The ideal candidate would have a background in both.
