MOU signed by U-SoA and UNAM

Dr. Gabriel Merigo Basurto, renowned architect and preservationist of many historic buildings all over Mexico for 30+ years, led a recent Currents lecture at the University of Miami School of Architecture (U-SoA) with a discussion of his works; Architectural Preservation in Mexico.  

The Currents lecture culminated in an historic moment with an MOU-signing among U-SoA and UNAM. Mr. Marcos Mazari Hiriart, the Dean for the Department of Architecture from the NATIONAL AUTONOMOUS UNIVERSITY OF MEXICO (UNAM), and Dean el-Khoury of the UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, signed an INTENT TO COLLABORATE, with an agreement to explore collaborative efforts on historic preservation between the two schools. Immediately following the lecture, guests were invited to the Exhibit Opening of Architectural Preservation in Mexico

Also in attendance at the signing were University of Miami President Julio Frenk, Lourdes Dieck-Assad, Vice President for Hemispheric and Global Affairs (UM), UM faculty, students and historic preservation advocates.

Dr. Merigo’s exhibit will be open to the public (Korach Gallery) until March 13, 2019.

Dr. Merigo received his Architectural degree (1978) from Universidad Iberoamericana, his Master´s degree (1989) from National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) Honorific Mention, and his Ph.D. in History of Architecture (1997), also from UNAM, Honorific Mention. Dr. Merigo leads architects and graduate students in the treatment of existing buildings of cultural significance.  He has developed a local, state, and regional reputation for excellence in master planning, building evaluations, adaptive reuse, compatible additions, restoration, and preservation planning.
