Pedagogy in Question Roundtable Discussion, and Opening Reception for Manifest Pedagogies Exhibition

By Silvia Alvarez
04.08.2019 U-SoA faculty were joined by the distinguished architect, Nader Tehrani, for a discussion about the current state of architectural education.

U-SoA Program Directors Carie Penabad and Allan Shulman, along with new faculty members, Joel Lamere, Chris Meyer and Charlotte Von Moos, led the lively conversation through a pointed set of open questions relevant to the School’s current status and ongoing initiatives. Topics ranged widely, from how the design of architectural learning spaces engender specific visions of the programs within them, to the need for interdisciplinary research within the profession. The stakes are high for these questions, which feel particularly urgent at U-SoA, where the recent opening of a grand new studio space and completion of a visionary campus master plan both promise to radically transform the School. The discussion served as an opportunity to reflect on what constitutes the “core” of architectural education, how thesis plays into the curriculum, and how the allocation of resources and space affect each. The conversation was followed by the opening of the exhibition Manifest Pedagogies in the Korach gallery, which includes the U-SoA campus master plan, completed by Tehrani’s firm, NADAAA.
