Over the weekend, University of Miami first-year and transfer students had the opportunity to create connections with peers and upper-class students while providing community service in South Florida.
Organized by the University of Miami Division of Students Affairs Williams R. Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development, Orientation Outreach took place on Saturday, August 25. More than 150 students met on the Student Center Complex Lakeside Patio on the Coral Gables campus to enjoy breakfast before being bused to Comstock Elementary School in Northwest Miami, where students spruced up the campus. Projects included repainting beams and planting shrubs around the Allapattah campus. Sebastian the Ibis also got in on the action.
The gratitude and enthusiasm was evident by the smiles on the faces of the volunteers. First-year students and transfers learned firsthand the impact of 'Canes in the community. The service event concluded with Orna L. Campbell, principal of the elementary school, thanking volunteers for their service.
