With the annual Miami Beach Pride Parade rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 19, the LGBTQ Student Center is hosting its own Pride Week from Sept. 14 through 17 to foster unity, inclusion, and engagement for all members of the community—regardless of identification.

The week kicks off with "Party with Pride" on Tuesday including giveaways, performers, a live DJ on the SCC Lakeside Patio from 7 - 9 p.m.

On Wednesday, the center will collaborate with OSTEM to provide a session of the “Pillow Talk” series. This conversation, named “The Politics of Pride,” partners with SAVE, a local LGBTQ+ rights organization, and features guest speaker, Orlando Gonzales. The event will take place at the SCC Lakeview Lounge from 7 – 8:30 p.m. and is available virtually via Zoom.

“These events serve as an opportunity for people to come together in a safe way and learn about the LGBTQ+ community,” said Gisela Vega, director of the LGBTQ Student Center.

To close out the week, on Sept. 19, pre-registered students, faculty, friends, and family can enjoy transportation to and from Miami Beach to participate in the Pride Parade on behalf of the University of Miami. The parade will feature musical performances and live entertainment. The University will walk as a unit and set up its own tent at the fair following the parade, offering t-shirts and breakfast.

“One of the things we want to do is help our students understand there is a community beyond campus that is there for them. Many of the students have never been to a Pride Parade before, and this grants them a chance to experience it first-hand,” adds Vega.
