Students share their reasons for being vaccinated

Dozens of lucky students who uploaded their vaccination documentation are receiving prizes as part of the University’s voluntary COVID-19 vaccination program. Students representing all campuses and all grade levels are among the winners.

Prizes will continue to be drawn for the next several weeks. To be eligible for the grand prizes of $5,000 cash or $1,000 in Dining Dollars, students must submit valid documentation to the registry by Nov. 4, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Samuel Raus, sophomore majoring in public relations and political science

“I chose to receive the COVID vaccine to keep my grandparents and other family members safe while being able to return to pre-pandemic life. I believe it is important that the entire UM community gets vaccinated so that we can finally see everyone's smiles in class!”

Prize: suite-level tickets for four at a Miami Hurricanes home basketball game


Chloe Beach, sophomore majoring in public relations

“I got the COVID-19 vaccine because I wanted to help keep the people around me safe. I have a few friends who are immunocompromised, and I wanted to help make the world safe for them again.”

Prize: catered cabana at the Biltmore Hotel for eight people


Theoni Varoudaki, second-year doctoral student in the cognitive and behavioral science program

“I was happy to get the vaccine as early as possible. It allowed me to protect myself and the people around me, and show my trust in the mRNA vaccine mechanism that has been under work for the past decades.”

Prize: airline voucher valued at $350

“I decided to get the COVID-19 vaccine in order to keep my family and friends safe. After all the research that has been done, there is no doubt that the vaccine will help us create a "new normal.”

Prize: $50 gift card to the Rathskeller



Bo Delacruz, student in the global executive MBA program

“I decided to get the vaccine so I could protect myself and my loved ones from COVID. They offered it at my workplace for free during a vaccine drive, so it was very convenient.”

Prize: attendance at a Hurricane football practice and photo with Sebastian

“I decided to get the covid vaccine in order to protect myself and others from getting covid. I personally know many people who have suffered from covid, including myself, and if the vaccine can help prevent the spread of covid, we should all be getting vaccinated.”
