On Thursday, February 19, join Team Hurricanes for Cycle Sesh, an outdoor cycling event on Lakeside Patio that raises money for cancer research. Every year, the Department of Wellness and Recreation collaborates with Team Hurricanes as a part of the Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC) to raise funds for life-saving cancer research at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The theme for this year is Halftime Hustle, an ohmage to artists who have performed during halftime over the years. There will be six 15-minute sessions to choose from between 6:30- 9:00 p.m. on Lakeside Patio. This is a chance to give back to your community while getting a workout in with friends.
Along with campus partners, students apart of Category 5 also contribute to the success of Cycle Sesh. David Kuper, Category 5 Chair, has been working with the Herbert Wellness Center and the Division of Student Affairs and Alumni Engagement since November on engaging students with Cycle Sesh. “I have been balancing a lot of things you are not typically doing when representing a student organization. It’s been an opportunity for me to diversify my skill set while engaging with the community.”
Nayelis Herrera, assistant director of student activities and student organization and the new advisor to Category 5, has jumped right in getting to lead the Cat 5 students in making this project happen. “Being the new person is kind of intimidating at first, but diving in and getting to work with this team and collaborating with DCC has been a good way to introduce myself to the University and what I stand for,” she shares.
In addition to Cycle Sesh, Team Hurricanes participates in the Dolphins Cancer Challenge's main program, a one-day event featuring cycling, walking, and running where 100% of the proceeds are given to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Last year, the challenge raised 15 million dollars, the first time in its history.
You don’t have to hop on a bike to be part of Cycle Sesh; there will be a variety of activities, including a raffle, all in support of cancer research. If you are interested in participating in Cycle Sesh register for a session here. Registration is limited to university students, staff, and faculty. Happy Cycling!
