The annual Patricia A. Whitely Leadership Symposium (WLS) unites students, staff, and campus leaders for a dynamic, multi-day experience centered on growth, connection, and positive social change. This year’s theme, Layers of Leadership, encouraged participants to explore the diverse qualities that contribute to effective leadership in today’s world.
Over the course of three days, attendees engaged in programming designed to foster professional development, personal reflection, and mental well-being. The symposium’s newly structured format allowed each day to focus on distinct leadership areas, creating a more intentional and accessible experience for students.
Behind the scenes, student leaders and staff from the Butler Center for Service and Leadership dedicated months of planning to bring the symposium to life. A committee of students, many of whom had previously attended WLS, worked collaboratively to build upon past successes and structure an accessible symposium for all students.
This year’s WLS Chair, Keira Hamilton, has been on the planning committee for the symposium for three years and was appointed to lead the team for her senior year.
“My time with WLS has truly pushed me to grow as a leader, preparing me for my current role as Chair. By observing previous Chairs and learning the "ins and outs" of our programming, noting what worked, what didn’t, and what could be improved, I have been able to carry those valuable lessons forward into this year,” she shared.
Under the guidance of Gabrielle Perez, Assistant Director of the Butler Center, Hamilton and a team of student employees began planning as early as September 2025, ensuring a thoughtful and impactful experience for all attendees.
The success of this year’s symposium reflects not only the strength of its programming, but also the dedication of the community behind it.
