Whether you want to become an athletic club manager, a college scouting assistant, a college athletics staff member, or a sports program director, you have to break into the industry first.

How do you get there? Here, we share a few tips to help you get started:

Get active now.

Take advantage of every opportunity to apply what you’re learning now in the industry. Apply for internships and actively participate in volunteer experiences so you can apply the skills introduced in the classroom within the industry.

Attend an industry conference.

Remember to choose those that are specific to your area of study so you can reap the benefits. There, you’ll meet industry professionals who gather to share best practices and network. Many conferences also have job fairs, which is an excellent way to build industry connections.

Get engaged!

Follow sports business professionals (remember to expand beyond the athletes to find coaches, training staff, and other influencers) on social media. Also, remember to follow our Master’s in Sports Administration faculty members to find more tips about the industry!

It’s never too early to begin your job search.

When you become a Uonline student in our Master’s in Sports Administration program, you are invited to access our exclusive Facebook page, which acts as a job or internship board for UM students.

Build your résumé.

Not sure where to start? Our Career Services center is accessible to all students and can help you polish your résumé to help you stand out from the crowd.

Take on related positions professionally or as a volunteer.

Don’t shy away from opportunities that will allow you to wear many hats and meet a range of professionals. Experiencing a variety of roles and responsibilities will help you hone your skillset and define your area of interest.

Connect with fellow sport industry professionals.

Request informational interviews with people who hold the positions you’d like to earn so you can learn from people in the field. An added benefit? This may also expand your network.

Remember, practice makes perfect.

The Master’s in Sports Administration degree alone will not get you your dream job. It’s a crucial stepping stone, but you need to put in the time, dedication, and practice to succeed in the industry.
