Three Ways to Prepare for Successful Online Learning

Three Ways to Prepare for Successful Online Learning

At UOnline, we are eagerly awaiting to welcome an incoming class of graduate students. Although UOnline teaches a similar curriculum to the University of Miami’s on-campus classes, its virtual format is new to many students. Whether you are new to UOnline or new to online learning, we have compiled three tips for a successful start to the new semester.

Check Your Online Course Connection

It may seem trivial, but we can’t think of a worse way to start the new semester than discovering you have a faulty internet connection. Before your online course begins, we recommend exploring your learning platform and testing your current internet connection. Download the syllabus, test videos, and click through multiple pages. This is also a great time to download and/or update any software that will be required during the course. If you find any issues, don’t panic! Many local organizations such as coffee shops or libraries offer high-speed Wi-Fi for free. If you think you need additional support, UOnline students can reach out at any time to our student support team.

Carve out Time for Online Learning

Perhaps the largest benefit of online learning is the flexibility to complete class on your time. This means earning your degree won’t compete with your job, family, etc. To maximize your time, we recommend carving out a few hours during the week that you can dedicate to school. Make a schedule and stick to it! Like anything else, leaving online courses to the last minute will only cause unnecessary stress. Put time on your calendar, similar to a doctor’s appointment, meeting or social engagement. This will help you develop a routine to complete coursework as well as help family, friends, and co-workers understand when you may not be available.

Make Space

Finding a space to study is imperative to being successful in any online learning program. It doesn’t have to be fancy and can be inside or outside your home. Most importantly your space must be away from distractions. This will be where you complete assignments, attend classes, and take exams or quizzes. You may even need to connect virtually with fellow classmates or faculty. Make sure this is a space you enjoy! The first day of school is an exciting time for any student. We recommend taking a few moments to prepare for your first and ensuring your future success as an online learner. Ready to take your career to the next level?
