Finding the right fit in a graduate program took some research for Ganesha Johnson. A civilian for the Air Force by day and a high school sports coach by night, Johnson needed a program that would help her reach her goal of becoming an athletic director while also fitting into her busy life. For her, the University of Miami’s online Masters of Education in Sport Administration was ideal.
Johnson credits her military experience with giving her the discipline required to complete the coursework. And the flexibility of an online program helped as well since you never know what surprises life might throw your way, she notes
“The way the courses are set up, it allows you to create your own schedule and work at your own pace. I recently had two foster children placed in my home and I knew I would still be able to get my work done by the deadlines.”
Johnson also found the faculty to be very involved and encouraging, even though she was not physically on campus. In particular, she was very impressed with Professor Windy Dees, an inaugural member of the online Masters in Sport Administration faculty.
“Professor Dees is very upbeat and very professional. She helped me on the right path and tailored her class for my goals.”
Professor Dee’s Sport Sponsorship and Principles of Sports Marketing courses helped prepare Johnson for her internship with the Cincinnati Reds. As an intern for the Consumer Club Department, Johnson hosted events and worked with partner organizations in the community, as well as managing the game day interns at each event. She believes that her understanding of sports industry-specific terms and concepts from the UOnline master’s program gave her a leg up.
“It creates tremendous opportunities. Professors who have never met you want you to succeed. There is a great support system of staff and sense of community that you become a part of.”
Johnson graduated with her Masters of Education in Sport Administration in the spring of 2017 and has since accepted a position at Ohio State at Lima as Athletic Director, Coordinator of Recreational Sports.
