Sport Industry Conference 2018
On April 5 and 6, the University of Miami will host the Global Entertainment + Sport Conference 2018at its Coral Gables campus. This year the School of Education & Human Development’s Master of Education -Sport Administration program is teaming up with the School of Law’s Entertainment & Sports Law Society to present the annual conference.
First-time partnership between Sport Administration and Law
The two-day event will focus on the areas of both law and business with keynote addresses and panels by prominent attorneys and executives. “We are partnering with the UM Law School for the first time this year, so there are some breakout sessions designed to cater to those attendees wanting to learn more about the legal side of sport,” said Clinical Assistant Professor Erin McNary, Ph.D., MSED in Sport Administration.
This year’s conference will cover such timely topics as the rise of athlete activism in the age of social media, the future of eSports, the monetization of digital content, and brand-building for athletes in the 21st century. Speakers represent a cross-section of the sport industry, such as Tobias Sherman, CEO and co-Founder of FOUNDRY IV, and Arny Schreer, vice president and general manager of partnership development at Home Team Sports, a division of Fox Sports Media Group.
“I think conference attendees will find that all of our speakers are engaging and experts in their areas,” said Prof. McNary. “We are excited to have Maria Taylor of ESPN CollegeGameDay as our keynote. Jorge and Laura Posada will be closing out the conference with a panel, A Helping Hand: Building a Brand and Using it to Effect Change.” Check out the full schedule and lineup of speakers here.
Many opportunities for networking as well as learning
The conference was designed with networking in mind, giving students, alumni, and business and legal professionals many opportunities to meet and interact. “There is a networking reception on Thursday evening open to all attendees. Many of The UM Sport Industry Leadership Council Members will be attending and are on panels, so this is another opportunity to meet industry professionals as well as other UM students,” said Prof. McNary.
“The conference is at no cost to UM students, so we're excited to have both on-campus and online students join us.”
