Shannal Thomas, who works at Microsoft in Jacksonville, earned his master’s in data analytics and program evaluation in May.

Becoming a Miami Hurricane has always been a dream for Shannal Thomas of Microsoft, who has worked in IT for more than two decades. This spring, Thomas made his dream a reality, earning his master’s in data analytics and program evaluation through UOnline and the School of Education and Human Development.

What is your favorite memory from your time as a UOnline student, and why?

My favorite memory from my time as a UOnline student was participating in a virtual chat with my colleagues in the program. It was an incredible experience where I collaborated with peers from different backgrounds and skill sets. We worked tirelessly to develop innovative solutions, and the sense of camaraderie and achievement when we presented our project was unforgettable. This event highlighted the power of teamwork and the potential of online learning to bring people together.

What was the biggest challenge you faced during your UOnline journey, and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge I faced during my UOnline journey was managing my time effectively. Balancing coursework with my professional responsibilities required a lot of discipline and organization. I overcame this by creating a detailed schedule, setting clear priorities, and using productivity tools to stay on track. Additionally, seeking support from professors and peers helped me navigate difficult periods and stay motivated.

Who or what has been the most significant inspiration to you throughout your studies?

The most significant inspiration throughout my studies has been my mentor, who is a seasoned professional in the tech industry. Their guidance, encouragement, and insights have been invaluable. They taught me the importance of perseverance, continuous learning, and staying curious. Their success story and dedication to helping others have motivated me to strive for excellence in my own career.

What are your plans after graduation, and what excites you most about this next chapter?

After graduation, I plan to continue my career at Microsoft, focusing on customer success and leveraging my skills to drive impactful projects. What excites me most about this next chapter is the opportunity to apply what I've learned to real-world challenges, contribute to innovative solutions, and grow professionally. I'm looking forward to collaborating with talented colleagues and making a meaningful difference in the tech industry.

What advice would you give to incoming UOnline students to help them succeed and make the most of their experience?

My advice to incoming UOnline students is to stay organized and proactive. Engage actively with your peers and professors, as building a strong network can provide support and open doors to opportunities. Don't hesitate to ask for help when needed and make use of all the available resources. Embrace challenges as learning experiences and maintain a balance between your studies and personal well-being.

How do you think your time at the U has prepared you for your future career or aspirations?

My time at UOnline has equipped me with essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. The diverse coursework and collaborative projects have prepared me to tackle complex issues and work efficiently in team settings. Additionally, the flexibility of online learning has taught me self-discipline and adaptability, which are crucial for success in any career. Overall, my experience has laid a strong foundation for my future aspirations and professional growth.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I’m proud to share that I graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning academic honors. This moment was even more special as it happened during the University’s centennial year—a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of 100 years of excellence. I want to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support throughout this journey. This milestone meant so much more because my kids were able to witness it—seeing firsthand what it means to work hard and finish what you start. Dreams really do come true when you follow God’s purpose for your life. Attending the University of Miami had always been a dream of mine. I was born a Canes fan from the day I entered this world!
