What do you find most rewarding about mentoring students in a fully online, globally connected learning environment?
McGuinn: The opportunity to connect with students from around the world is truly special. Our new online program brings together learners from different states, countries, cultures, and professional backgrounds. That diversity is one of the greatest strengths of the experience.
What makes the MAIA program at the University of Miami unique? Why choose Miami for this degree?
McGuinn: The University of Miami has a long-standing global focus and deep regional connections, and that naturally shapes the MAIA program. Our curriculum is designed for students interested in careers with international organizations, NGOs, and both private and public institutions. We've built a course of study that prepares students for meaningful, globally minded professional paths.

What advice do you have for students looking to stay motivated and successful in an online format?
McGuinn: Engagement is everything. That applies across all forms of education, but in an online environment it becomes even more essential. Staying connected—with instructors, classmates, and the material—helps students fully immerse themselves and get the most out of the program.
How do you integrate real-world projects or industry insights into your teaching?
McGuinn: It's organic to the MAIA program. Because this is a professional degree, we are always thinking about what comes next for our students. Real-world application is built directly into the coursework and discussions.
How does UOnline redefine what's possible in online education?
McGuinn: Access. The online format allows students worldwide—regardless of schedule, geography, or life demands—to engage with a program they may not otherwise have been able to pursue. It opens doors.
What kinds of results are you seeing from students so far?
McGuinn: Although it's still early, we're already seeing strong enthusiasm and engagement. Students are deeply invested in the material and in their conversations with one another, which gives me great confidence in the outcomes ahead.
If you had to describe the UOnline MAIA program in three words, what would they be?
McGuinn:
- Elegance – There's a seamless connection between form and function. As someone new to online teaching, I expected the technology to dominate the experience, but it doesn't—it supports it beautifully.
- Substance – The platform creates space to focus deeply on the core material in a very pure way.
- Support – Students benefit from strong technological and pedagogical support, and instructors do as well.
What's one myth about online education you'd like to debunk?
McGuinn: The idea that technology overwhelms the learning process. In reality, the technology enhances learning by allowing instructors and students to focus on the heart of the subject matter in meaningful ways.
